What's the difference between a life coach, a counselor, a mentor, a therapist and a psychologist?

There's no punchline here - it's a serious question. And one I get quite a lot in one variation or another.

The follow-up question is typically "Which one is best?" or "Which one do you recommend?"

 
My guest today is Dr. Joshua Bourne, a Counselling Psychologist and Life Coach.  Joshua works specifically with people suffering with anxiety and stress.

What I really enjoyed about this conversation was hearing a licensed psychologist explain, with incredible clarity and conviction, the importance of life coaching.  Dr. Bourne makes a fantastic case for why he chose to add life coaching into his business.

Plenty of people will tell you they like your stuff.

 

They'll write "Great post!" and give you some fire emojis and little 100% signs... and that's all well and good.

 

What that basically translates into is "I like your stuff."  But it doesn't necessarily mean "I want to pull out my wallet and hire you RIGHT NOW!"

This is why you must be able to shift.

Your content must hit your audience right between the eyes. It has to be EXACTLY what they need... not just kinda what they want to hear.

Over the past week I've received dozens of emails, messages and social media reaction to last week's episode about validating your value.

Most of you agreed with what I was talking about (if you haven't heard the conversation, I encourage you to go back and listen - it's worth it, I promise!)

Some of you disagreed. And that's okay too.

Personally, the biggest shift I've ever made in my business came when I changed my stance on value. The moment I upgraded my worth and declared my true value, I've encountered significantly less friction when I talk to potential clients.

People know that I'm not "cheap" to work with. And they respect that.

They can either choose to work with me... or not. And I respect that.

But I won't lower my value to accommodate someone else's opinion of me - and neither should you.

You could be the most qualified coach in the world, but it doesn't matter if you can't get people to invest in you.

Traditionally we've learned to "close" people through a specific conversation or closing script.

The problem comes when we have to make adjustments... perhaps the client doesn't understand something our process.

Or perhaps we're spending too much time emphasizing a benefit that doesn't really matter to them.
